| Doctor Ordered Treatments to Prevent Blood Clots |
What is the problem? Many times patients require both mechanical blood clot prevention techniques and the addition of a medication. However, there is a risk for bleeding following surgery, and the benefits of using blood thinners must be weighed against the risks. The new guidelines have been helpful in determining which patients require the additional medication intervention. The guidelines have strong evidence for the use of medications to prevent clots. How are we fixing it? The Surgical-Medical Committee is reviewing the guidelines and making practice changes to reflect the new ones. |
